She started her career as a Chair in drug delivery in 2002 at the University of Strathclyde. From 2002 to 2004, she was a lecturer there. In 2006, she became a Chair in Pharmaceutical Nanoscience at the School of Pharmacy, University College London.

She was selected to be featured in the Women of Outstanding Achievement in Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) Photographic Exhibition in 2007. This exhibition was showcased at prominent venues, including the Science Museum and the British Museum.

In 2010, alongside Andreas Schatzlein, she founded Nanomerics, a pharmaceutical company that develops medicine using nanotechnology. Uchegbu took on the role of Pro-Vice Provost for Africa and the Middle East in 2015.

She also leads the Africa and Middle East regional network at University College London. In 2018, she played a key role in a £5.7 million research grant funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The project was titled “Raman Nanotheranostics.”

It focuses on utilizing gold nanoparticles for disease identification and employing light to eliminate diseased cells. Additionally, she is involved in research involving magnetic nanoparticles.
