The horror movie “It,” which was based on a scary story by Stephen King from 1986, made the most money ever in 2017. This was a big deal for King, whose stories have been turned into movies many times over the years, though not all of them have done very well. There are, however, many movies and TV shows that are based on King’s scary style that you can watch right now.

Carrie (1976 & 2013)
Teenager Carrie has a lot of problems at high school. Her strict mother and friends are mean to her and even lock her in a room. But they don’t know that Carrie can magically change things with her mind. Because of this, she can do strange things when pushed too far. This story by Stephen King shows how dangerous that can be. In the 1976 movie, Carrie is played by Sissy Spacek, and her mother is played by Piper Laurie. In addition, John Travolta’s first movie. Chloë Grace Moretz plays Carrie in the 2013 movie directed by Kimberly Peirce, and Julianne Moore plays her mother.

Creepshow 2 (1987)
This collection of stories was inspired by the macabre works of Stephen King. It is a follow-up to 1982’s Creepshow, which the author worked on with horror legend George A. Romero. The best part of the sequel is “The Raft,” which is about a group of college students who go on a weekend trip to a lake and find a living blob of sludge that makes their trip anything but relaxed. Two more King stories, “Pinball,” which is about bowling, and “Cat From Hell,” were planned but never got made because of money issues. For the second one, Tales From the Darkside: The Movie (1990) was the end result. You can the movie on Amazon Prime.
Cujo (1983)
This story is for people who love dogs. The movie “Cujo,” which was made by Lewis Teague, is about a nice St. Bernard dog called Cujo. After being bitten by a crazy bat, he goes crazy and starts fighting and hurting people. Both the movie and the book it’s based on show scary things from the dog’s point of view, which is interesting and different. It has Dee Wallace, Danny Pintauro, Daniel Hugh-Kelly, Christopher Stone, and Ed Lauter as its stars. Max lets you watch it.
Children of the Corn (1984 & 2020)
This movie shows what could happen if kids decide to be in charge. A 12-year-old girl named Eden leads the kids in a small Nebraska town. She is ruled by a dark force that can’t be seen. They begin to kill the adults to stop them from setting fire to the corn fields to get government money, which would be bad for the childhood. One girl, Boleyn, doesn’t agree with Eden and tries to stop her. But how can Boleyn beat the dark force even if she does victory? Ellen Kampouris, Callan Mulvey, Bruce Spence, Stephen Hunter, Erika Heynatz, and Kate Moyer are in the movie. You can watch it on Hulu and it’s directed by Kurt Wimmer. There is a 9-year-old boy named Isaac Chroner instead of Eden in the 1984 version, but the idea is the same. It’s directed by Fritz Kiersch and you can watch it on Prime.
The Dark Half (1993)
What would you do if someone tried to dominate your life? Do you want to get rid of it? Not only that, but you would also have to leave yourself. Other options are available. Although it’s very dangerous, you could try to live with it. Many of these ideas are addressed in “The Dark Half” by George A. Romero. When Timothy Hutton plays Thad Beaumont in this movie, the character who writes scary books under the name “George Stark” is in conflict with his own dark side, which wants to hurt or even kill Thad’s family and friends. Starring in the movie are Amy Madigan, Michael Rooker, Julie Harris, Robert Joy, and Timothy Hutton. When it first came out, it did really well, falling to sixth place in the box office rankings. The acting by Timothy Hutton as Thad Beaumont/George Stark was especially praised. You can watch the movie on Hulu.
The Green Mile (1999)
This movie stars Tom Hanks and is based on a 1996 book by King. There were six parts to the story. Hanks plays a jail guard in a movie where people are waiting to die. In jail, he meets Michael Clarke Duncan, a man who might have special skills. Camera tricks were used to make Duncan look even bigger than he is. You can watch the movie on Hulu.
Apt Pupil (1998)
Bryan Singer’s movie is about a 16-year-old boy named Todd Bowden who makes a deal with his old friend Arthur Denker. Todd learns that Arthur used to be a Nazi soldier named Kurt Dussander. Arthur is forced by Todd to learn more about the Nazi camps and killings that he is interested in. At the same time, Arthur encourages Todd to use what he knows to do better in school. What if someone else learns the truth about Arthur, though? Then can Todd help? The movie “Apt Pupil” stars Ian McKellen as Arthur Denker/Kurt Dussander and Brad Renfro as Todd Bowden. At the 25th Saturn Awards, it won Best Horror Film. Ian McKellen also won a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor. You can watch the film on Prime.
