Austin George Carr is a retired professional basketball player, born on 10th March 1948 in Washington, D.C., USA. He is best known as “Mr.Cavalier” by Cleveland basketball fans, but also played for the Dallas Mavericks and Washington Bullets of the NBA. Today, Austin is a color commentator on Fox Sports Ohio and the Director of Community Relations for the Cavaliers.

Carr was raised in Washington, D.C. where he went to Holy Redeemer School and then Mackin Catholic High School. During his schooling at Notre Dame University, he started playing college basketball, and his talent earned him the AP College Player of the Year award and the 1971 Naismith title. In his final two seasons, Austin became the only player ever to tally more than 1000 points in a season, and also holds records for the NCAA for most points in a game, most field goals attempted and scored in one game. Due to his success, he was recently named the 22nd greatest college basketball player ever by ESPN.

In the 1971 NBA draft, Carr was the first overall selection of the Cleveland Cavaliers and also drafted by Virginia Squires in the ABA Draft, but decided to sign with the Cavaliers. However, his first season in the NBA was full of injuries which significantly hampered his output. In spite of the obstacles, Austin managed to display his full skills upon recovery, and became the NBA’s top selection as well as a member of the 1972 All-Rookie Team. The following three seasons saw Carr in a significant role in three playoff appearances, and he was named NBA All-Star in 1974 and awarded the J.Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1980, the same year he transferred to Dallas Mavericks.

Austin played his final season with the Mavericks in 1981, when he announced his retirement. For his contribution in basketball, he was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007 and four years later into the Notre Dame Basketball Ring of Honor. Apart from this, one of his most notable career acknowledgements is being inducted in the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and receiving the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

After retiring as a player, Carr continued his career as a color commentator on Fox Sports Ohio. He also became the Cavaliers’ Director of Community Relations, a position he still holds.
