Before her 2017 debut album peaked at number six on the French charts, French Afrobeat and R&B singer Aya Nakamura established a sizable fan base by releasing music on her YouTube channel.

She adopted the surname Nakamura when she started her musical career in honour of the American television series Heroes’ Hiro Nakamura. She began earning subscribers to her YouTube page with early songs like “Karma” and “J’ai mal,” but it was her song “Brisé” that amassed millions of listens. Fans responded favourably to Nakamura’s warm fusion of R&B, pop, and Afrobeat rhythms, and she quickly signed with Warner Music France, which issued her debut album, Journal Intime, in 2017. The songs “Karma” and “J’ai mal” that Nakamura released online helped her build a fan base.

Her manager and producer was a longtime buddy named Dembo Camara. Notably, her song “Brisé” gained popularity on YouTube, and her collaboration with rapper Fababy on the song “Love d’un voyou” led to her debuting in the French charts. In 2017, she put out her first record, Journal Intime. A year later, she put out Nakamura, which received a Diamond certification in France. It gave rise to the successful singles “Djadja” and “Copines” and started the singer’s career on a global scale.

She received the Best Urban Album European Music Moves Talent Award in January 2019. She received nominations for Best Urban Album and Song of the Year at the 2019 France Music Awards in February. She debuted the music video for “Pookie” in April 2019, and it quickly became the most-watched French video of the year. The New York Times described her as “one of the most important acts in Europe now, musically and socially” in May 2019. She received her first BET Award nomination for Best International Act in June 2019. With the tune “Pookie” (with over 240 million YouTube views), she acquired popularity in the summer of 2019. High-profile international versions with multi-platinum rappers Capo Plaza and Lil Pump were also released.
