Biography

Energy Mutodi (born 4 August 1978) is a Zimbabwean politician, businessman, lawyer, author, and musician. He serves as ZANU–PF Member of Parliament for Goromonzi West. He was the Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services.

Mutodi ventured into music in 2012 and has dropped ten albums. He has established his band Mutodi Express. Some of his known songs are Angelina, Chigorodanda, and Tozosangana.

Energy Mutodi was born on 4 August 1978 in Bikita. His parents, Johnson Mutodi and Vaina Chipepura, registered him at primary schools in Njaravani. 

Education

Mutodi studied at Njaravani and Nyahunda Primary Schools. He later transferred to Chedutu Primary School in 1988. 

After he finished Grade 7 in 1991, he attended secondary school at Tagona High School and Mashoko Mission. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in War Studies and Geography at the University of Zimbabwe.

Mutodi holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Laws Honours Degree from the University of Zimbabwe. He obtained a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town in 2019.

Career

Politics

Mutodi joined the civil service as a school teacher at Chikangwe High School in 2002. He taught Ordinary and Advanced Level Geography.

In 2004, he created a property development company National Housing Delivery Trust. Later in 2006, he joined the ZANU PF Chibvuti branch in Mashonaland East province. He served as the Provincial Secretary for Economic Affairs.

In 2009, he became the Secretary for Transport and later Secretary for Finance. He became a member of the Mashonaland East Provincial Executive after the elections for the Provincial Executive in 2013. 

In August 2018, Mutodi won the Goromonzi West seat as a Member of Parliament in elections. President Emmerson Mnangagwa named him the Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services.

Energy Mutodi attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in London in September 2022.

Books

Energy Mutodi has written two textbooks. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has administered them into Zimbabwe’s secondary education system. The books include Advanced Physical Geography (2013) and Advanced Human & Economic Geography (2022).

Music

Mutodi is a sungura musician who dropped his first album in 2012. He has dropped over ten albums and has established his band Mutodi Express. At first, he led the old Real Sounds of Africa band for one year.

Some songs that gained massive airplay include Angelina, Chigorodanda, and ‘Tozosangana. He has also dropped albums like Kumasese, Sekawo Mbichana, Magetsi Ngaabake, and Kuita Kuri Kwenyu.

The musician praised Zimbabwe’s Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa in his last album Havo Ndibaba.

Energy Mutodi allegedly fired gunshots at Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in 2023. On Twitter, he challenged Mr Chamisa’s CCC supporters to show him any wounded person from a purported shooting and they could not.
