Van Tonder is best known for his movie appearances, although he started his career as a singer. The singer was a member of the Afrikaans duo Groep 2, with Sias Reinecke, for fifteen years.
Gert has penned many songs over the years. Some of his works include Sproeitjies and Karnaval in Bloemfontein. After he left the group, he became a solo singer. He focused on television and appeared in films.
The actor has appeared in radio dramas and stage plays. He was a co-presenter for the kid’s television program Wielie Walie for twelve years.
Gert has appeared in movies, including Jy is My Liefling in 1968, Sien Jou More in 1970, and Z.E.B.R.A. in 1971. He played roles in Die Wit Sluier in 1973, Die Rebel in 1976, and Sonja in 1978.
