To begin with, Mark spent his academic career with the Washington Huskies. He played in the Rose Bowl three times and celebrated victories in 1991 and 1992, and a defeat in 1993.
Concerning his professional career, Mark Brunell was selected in the 5th round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. After two years with the Packers, Brunell was acquired by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995. In 1996, he was the NFL’s best passer with 4,367 yards, and while playing in Jacksonville team, Brunell was called three times for the Pro Bowl, in 1996, 1997 and 1999, being honoured as the MVP in 1996. With Brunell the Jaguars won the title of the AFC Central Division and became the first team to reach the play-offs in three of four seasons. Brunell left the franchise as the owner of all of the team’s record.
Then, he was traded to the Washington Redskins before the season 2004. He was replaced in mid-season with quarterback Patrick Ramsey. After this he was injured at the beginning of the 2005 season. In 2006, Brunell surpassed the NFL record for consecutive passes completed in a game, completing his first 22 against the Houston Texans. Brunell also established the franchise record for highest completion percentage in a single game (88.9%). The previous record had belonged to a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame – Sammy Baugh for 66 years (87.5%). In the end of 2006, after winning only three of the first nine games of the 2006 season, Brunell was benched in favour of Jason Campbell, then in 2007, Brunell was surpassed in the hierarchies of the team by Todd Collins .
In 2008, Brunell was traded to the New Orleans Saints to serve as a reserve for Drew Brees, and in the first season with the team he never took the field. After playing as a holder for the regular 2009 season, Brunell returned to the field as a quarterback in the last game of the season. In Super Bowl XLIV the Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts, thus Brunell won his only career ring, and the Saints their first. In 2010, Brunell signed a two-year deal with the New York Jets as a reserve for Mark Sanchez, but when his contract expired after 201 it was not renewed.
Mark has since taken up coaching, currently of the Episcopal School of Jacksonville.
