Pieter-Steph Du Toit (born 20 August 1992) is a South African rugby union player. He plays the Toyota Verblitz in Japan Rugby League One and the South Africa national team.

Du Toit plays the position of a lock or a flanker. He won the 2019 Rugby World Cup with South Africa, which earned him the World Rugby Player of the Year.

Early Life

Pieter-Steph Du Toit was born on 20 August 1992 in Cape Town, South Africa. His grandfather Piet du Toit was a South African rugby international and played as a prop. 

His brother Johan du Toit is a rugby union player for the Stormers in Super Rugby.

Education

Du Toit attended Hoërskool Swartland, Malmesbury. In high school, he played mostly in the back row. He was in the South Africa Under 20 squad that won the 2012 IRB Junior World Championship.

Career

Pieter-Steph signed a two-year contract extension with the Sharks in July 2023. He did not renew his contract with the team and left in October 2015.

Steph made his Springboks Test debut in a match against Wales in Cardiff on 9 November 2013. He has since played as a regular for the Springboks.

In the 2015 Ruby World Cup, Du Toit played for the South African team. He came off the bench in the quarter-final at Twickenham Stadium, and SA defeated Wales 23–19.

In the next season, he started to play as a regular starter for the SA team under new head coach Allister Coetzee. In June 2018, as captain, he led the Springboks out against Wales but lost 20-22.

Du Toit participated in the mid-year England series, and South Africa won. He returned to the back row in 2019. He was in South Africa’s squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. His team won the tournament as they defeated England in the final.

Steph received the World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year in 2019.
